Luther never intended to split from the Catholic Church, he was committed to it. He was in total disagreement with some of the practices and immorality happening within the church. One of the practices he had major issues with was the selling of indulgences. The Catholic Church was teaching that personal sins and the sins of family members could be forgiven by paying for indulgences. This is a chest that was used to transfer the money from the payments of the people to the church.
