Even though Luther had no intent on splitting from the Catholic church, that is exactly what happened. Along with Calvin, Zwingli and others, the protest against the established church birthed the Protestant Reformation. This painting (sorry that many of the pictures are dark, we could not use any flash in the churches, museums or castles) depicts Luther in a tug-of-war with the Pope. Luther has his weapon, the quill, in his mouth and has the Lord at his back. The Pope is surrounded by clergy.
