By Rich Peterson, Church Relations
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. – 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Vice-President for Partner Ministries, Mark Harris has written,
“As AMBASSADORS for Christ, we are sent to do what He would if He were personally present with us. We are to make known, explain, and enforce the terms on which God is willing to be reconciled to women and men. We are not to negotiate on any new terms, nor to change those which God has proposed, nor follow our own plans or devices. Ambassadors are simply to urge, explain, state, and enforce the terms on which God is willing to be reconciled to women and men”.
In reflection on those comments, I became confident that we are to be Christ’s appealing ambassadors. While this is a call for each of us as Christ-followers, there are those among us who are being called by the Holy Spirit to become appealing ambassadors in another culture.
As a leader in your local church, I encourage you to be on the lookout for those in your midst whom God might be calling to cross-cultural missions.
Identify those among you who display a life yielded to God, controlled by His Spirit. According to the great missionary, Hudson Taylor a life yielded to God looks like this:
- They have a restful trust in God for the supply of all needs.
- They have a sympathetic spirit and willingness to take a lowly place.
- They have tact in dealing with people and adaptability toward circumstances.
- They have zeal in service and steadfastness in discouragements.
- They have love for communion with God and for the study of His word.
- They have some experience and blessing in the Lord’s work at home.
- They have a healthy body and a vigorous mind.
- They are in your local Body of believers right now – listening to the Holy Spirit’s call and seeking to be sent out by your church!
LOOK for them. LISTEN to them. DISCOVER them. SEND them!
