Counselor for Kids in Slum Area

Children in the slums of Medellin, Columbia are at risk for entering a lifestyle of gangs and drug use. Be a part of those reaching out to these children and offer hope through counseling.

REQUIREMENTS:
Person of prayer. Counseling license recommended, with specific training in trauma in order to understand this population and their trauma triggers. Learn Spanish and the culture. Earn the trust of the community. Vision trip is not required, but recommended.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with at-risk children to provide hope in Christ compared to other options in their area of gangs, drugs and prostitution. Provide counseling services to children. Extend the love of God.
LIVING ENVIRONMENT:
Medellin is a city of 2.5 million people. It is a beautiful, modern city, surrounded by mountains. A lot of the people live in Apartments for security reasons as well as the fact that high rises are the makeup of most cities in South America. It is a Western society, though the type of people you would be working with are primarily from the slums surrounding the city. They are very poor people who have little resources. Housing would be coordinated with the on-site missionaries.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work would be done in the slums surrounding the city of Medellin. You would meet individually with children/women/families in their homes or in an office in the home of your missionary supervisors.
